Hallway and Staircase Carpet
What is the best carpet for your stairs and hallways?
While hallways and staircases almost always have carpeted surfaces, the truth of the matter is picking your new hallway and staircase carpet is nowhere near as simple or as straightforward as some people think it’s going to be.
Choosing carpet for these spaces is actually incredibly tricky. You have to think about a number of critical considerations – how your carpet looks, how it feels underfoot, whether or not it offers safety and security in these high-traffic areas, and how it’s going to stand up to the test of time with daily use, etc. – that you don’t have to consider with other carpet choices.
The best carpet for your hallway and your staircase is always going to be carpet that is safe, carpet that is comfortable, and carpet that is durable enough to handle maybe the most highly trafficked spaces in any home.
What are the most durable carpets?
You are certainly going to want to have your most durable carpet installed in your hallway and on your staircases, bringing a lot of extra durability and strength to these areas that we just highlighted above are going to see more traffic than maybe any other flooring area in your home on average.
Polyester fibres have a very luxurious field as well as a beautiful appearance while offering extreme durability, but they aren’t able to offer quite as much durability as nylon fibres – easily the most durable of any fibre – and wool.
Nylon fibres can stand up to just about any sort of use and abuse unimaginable, and nylon carpets are a great option for those that want to install them in a hallway or on a staircase. Wool carpet materials are great as well, offering almost as much durability as nylon but being a natural fibre and a little bit more cushiony underfoot.
What carpets are easiest to clean?
Your polyester and nylon fibres – or any inorganic fibres you choose for hallway and staircase carpet – are always going to be a lot easier to clean and maintain than softer, organic fibres like wool.
Wool does a great job at pushing back against dirt, debris, stains, and soil but it isn’t quite as easy to get completely clean if these elements have an opportunity to “set in” the way that polyester and nylon fibres are.
With polyester and nylon the cleaning approach is simple and straightforward and you can lift pretty much any element out of these kinds of carpets with no real headache or hassle.
What colours are suitable for your stairs and hallway?
Choosing the right colours for your hallway and staircase carpet is going to be a little tricky, because you want something relatively neutral that works in a transitional kind of space but you also want something that grabs attention – particularly on staircases when dark surroundings can be quite dangerous.
It’s also important to think about how the colour of the stairway and hallway carpets are going to influence the overall interior design aesthetic and atmosphere not only of these individual spaces but of the spaces that they transition into as well.
For this reason neutral colours are usually a better choice than anything else.
How much does it cost to carpet stairs?
The average cost of having carpeting installed in Australia today sits at just about $32 per square meter, but will be influenced by:
- The type of carpet you go with
- The actual size and dimensions of your space
- Whether or not older carpet has to be removed and disposed of
- Whether or not sub-flooring or underlayment has to be taken care of
- The cost of having professionals install carpet for you for taking a DIY approach
